Australia: Jane Jacobs Walk Gertrude Street

We invite you to join us in this walk that brings together the spirit of Jane Jacob's walk with the oral storytelling tradition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This walk brings together the spirit of Jane Jacobs Walk with the oral storytelling tradition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We will be exploring Gertrude Street in the Fitzroy neighbourhood of Melbourne, using the app Yalinguth, which uses geo-located oral storytelling. https://www.yalinguth.com.au/

The app is meant to "connect all communities to historical firsthand accounts told by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. The purpose is to increase knowledge, empathy, respect, and community connection. Yalinguth is also a celebration of the Elders who paved the way for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Rights in Victoria and Australia."

Using the app, we will take a "stroll down Gertrude Street in Ngár-go/Fitzroy, a highly significant area for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Rights Movement. We will walk around the neighbourhood, listening to geo-located stories and sounds that will take us on a journey through time."

Let us take the initiative and explore Gertrude Street together, uncovering "the wisdom and stories of [community] Elders and ancestors as [we] walk [our] own journey."

Como dijo Jane Jacobs en The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961):

Baltimore, MD- Patterson Park, a green heart kept by communities

We will see how true Jane Jacobs theory about parks may be as we walk through and explore Patterson Park. Friends of Patterson Park will talk about the park history, its organization and projects. Some other passionate people from different clubs and close neighborhoods will tell us how they use and contribute to the park. We will learn how all of them keep this green heart alive. Their volunteer work makes Patterson Park a vibrant, safe and healthy place to enjoy as a neighbor or a visitor.

As Jane Jacobs stated in The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961):

“Conventionally, neighbourhood parks or parklike open spaces are considered boons conferred on the deprived populations of cities.  Let us turn this thought around, and consider city parks deprived places that need the boon of life and appreciation conferred upon them.  This is more nearly in accord with reality, for people do confer use on parks and make them successes – or else withhold use and doom parks to rejection and failure.”

India: Exploring the living heritage in the walled city of Ahmedabad

As we take a stroll through the old city of Ahmedabad, we will be able to observe how the city's urban morphology reflects Jane Jacobs' ideas and strategies in urban planning and design. We will notice how the city's architecture and layout are built around the needs of people and communities, rather than cars or commercial development. We will also see how these ideas are interwoven with the unique character and history of the city, as evidenced by the traditional pols and the vibrant bazaars. As we make our way through the narrow streets, we will see how the city's planning perspectives have evolved over the centuries. We will observe how the walled city was built with a focus on security and defense, resulting in narrow and winding streets, fortifications, and gateways. We will also see how the traditional pols were built around a shared community space and how this concept of mixed-use development has continued to thrive in the old city today. We will also compare and contrast the old city's planning perspectives with contemporary planning in areas like West Ahmedabad. We will see how contemporary planning is often focused on automobile traffic and prioritizes commercial development over community spaces, leading to issues like congestion and lack of pedestrian-friendly streets. We will then explore the current uses and associated issues facing the old city. We will see how the city's traditional industries like textiles and crafts have continued to thrive, while also facing challenges from modernization and globalization. Finally, we will brainstorm ways to approach urban planning and design in today's context. We will discuss the importance of preserving historic architecture, promoting mixed-use development, and creating walkable communities while also accommodating modern amenities and infrastructure.

We are going to be talking about those processes, areas that have been significantly designed by men for men, spaces that don't think elderly, people with deficiencies, and mothers with trollers but also spaces designed by local communities, community centers that host events, open the space for its citizens, places that are being used by children and much more.
