Fight 2 end Animal Cruelty

We will be discussing the effects of Animal Cruelty and how we can prevent the violent terrible things that are happening to our four-legged friends. We will also be able to learn how we can adopt a vegan diet, how to ditch wool, leather and fur, how to ditch all beauty/hair care/hygiene items that test and experiment on animals, how to prevent going to places that promote and produce animal cruelty (such as circuses, most pet stores, animal sports, and Sea World), and even how to stop the horse carriage company and the incidents that occur with horse carriages every year, as well as why we should call exercise “fighting for the animals” and the health/environmental benefits of the vegan diet! This Jane Jacobs Walk is for the animals! The event will take place in May 25, 2013 and October 12, 2013 in honor of Vegetarian Month!

The sanitised urban supermarket, the fisherwomen who hawk their wares along an old village bylane, the gent who used to own a barbecue, where neighbours and strangers could buy food and stop for a chat, the lady who cooks at her doorstep, and feeds the migrant guards as well as migrant white collar worker. Metamorphosis of Mazagaon

Photos from Urban Design Collective

Mazagaon, one of the few remaining European remnants of Mumbai, is the hotbed of continuous metamorphosis due to its historic ability to encompass the new and the old of influences. Proof of this, is its possession of the spatial intersections of various religious & regional communities , such as the Maharashtrians, East Indians, Anglo-Indians, Catholic Konkanies, Khoja Muslims, Bori Muslims & many more. This walk wishes to showcase the rich cultural heritage that exists in Mazagaon, as well as provide a commentary on the existing social structure of the area. Included in this, are chronicles of Mazagaon’s forgotten past, stories of impending change and urban legends that continue to haunt its residents to this day. All in all, this is a walk to have a dialogue about how cities are made by and of people, and how it belongs to each of us, even the scary bits.

Time: 7.30 am to 9.30 am

Dark Age Ahead – The Wizard of O’Farrell Jane Jacobs Walk

Jane Jacobs writing in Dark Age Ahead, identified five pillars of our culture that we depend on but which are in serious decline:

Community and Family
Higher Education
The Effective Practice of Science
Taxation and Government
Self-policing by Learned Professions

The decay of these pillars, Jacobs contended, was behind such ills as environmental crisis, racism and the growing gulf between rich and poor; their continued degradation could lead us into a new Dark Age, a period of cultural collapse in which all that keeps a society alive and vibrant is forgotten.
This walk will tie in ideas discussed in Jane’s last book she published before she died, Dark Age Ahead as seen through the lens of downtown San Francisco Neighborhoods.
Please join this walk.

This tour, led by MacArthur “genius” Fellow and Peabody Award winning radio host of ThePromisedLand.org, Majora Carter, will take participants through the streets of her youth as folks learn about what it all looked like when the neighborhood was built, when it burned, and how it is still rebuilding before our eyes today.

Special attention will be paid to the 5-acre Spofford juvenile detention facility – built in 1959, and closed in 2011. As an extension of the experience, you are invited to attend Memories of the Future at 4:00 PM

MCG has co-sponsored this community led theater project involving an inter-generational group of people whose live were in some way affected by the Spofford Juvenile Detention facility.
Some members of this group were inmates of, or workers inside Spofford,or local residents, or someone they loved was in there.

For the past 10 weeks, they have met every Monday 6:30pm-9pm with Theater of the Oppressed artistic coaches, and multi-media director Melanie Crean to explore their experiences and feelings about Spofford.

Now, they are ready to show a live audience what they’ve learned, and invite audience members to react & contribute as part of the performances.

The observations gleaned from these 2 unique theatrical events will go on to inform and influence how the 5-acre Spofford site will be re-developed in the future.

Jane Jacobs Walk in Iowa City

The neighborhoods immediately north and east of downtown Iowa City contain an array of lovely older buildings, many of which are included in the College Green and (newly-created) Jefferson Street Historic Preservation Districts. But these neighborhoods are also facing increasing development pressure, which has resulted in the construction (and planned construction) of several new multi-story mixed-use buildings. Whether these changes will contribute positively to the long-term prosperity and vitality of the city has recently been a topic of considerable public debate. Participants on the tour will be encouraged to see the neighborhoods and debate through Jane Jacobs’ eyes, and to draw upon her thinking to suggest alterations that would make the neighborhoods into even more attractive, diverse, and livable places.

Retracing San Francisco’s Freeway Revolt

As an activist, Jane Jacobs helped stop two planned-for urban expressways, one in Manhattan, the other in Toronto. San Francisco also had its own decades-long parallel struggle eventually dubbed the “Freeway Revolt”.This Jane’s Walk will retrace the route of the former Embarcadero Freeway, along what today is Herb Caen Way. During this walk a history of planned freeways criss-crossing San Francisco will be presented, along with the struggles to stop them from being built, or to tear down existing expressways. As we walk the route, we will highlight the positive results and unintended consequences of bringing down the Embarcadero Freeway. With the walk leader being from Toronto, comparisons between both cities will be made on the intersection of Expressways, Public Transit, Neighbourhoods, and Waterfronts plus the politics driving them all. This Jane’s Walk winds up in Chinatown ending in front of the Central T Subway Station currently under construction. This subway station is an important piece of a giant transit jigsaw puzzle that helps us to understand San Francisco’s municipal politics.

Time: 12 p.m.

Date: Saturday, May 4, 2013

Event Start/End:

Start Location : Cupid’s Span in Rincon Park. We’ll meet at the footpath right in front of the Giant Arrow where it enters the ground.

End Location : in front of Central T Subway Station currently under construction in Chinatown.
