This tour explores a portion of East Sacramento, one of Sacramento’s earliest streetcar suburbs, notable for its architectural beauty and landscape design. The stories of some of the original inhabitants of this East Sacramento tract will be shared, and the architectural styles of the neighborhood discussed. Tour led by Preservation Sacramento’s East Sacramento Subcommittee.

Jane Jacobs Walk and Jane Jacobs Roll are part of a continent-wide series of walks and bike rides based on the principles of Jane Jacobs, author of The Death and Life of Great American Cities. Written in an era when American cities promoted the suburb and the automobile, turning their backs on downtowns and older neighborhoods, her work changed the way American planners thought about cities. It is widely read today by modern urban planners, promoting sidewalks, parks, mixed use, residential density, local economies and walkability. 

Part history tour, part urban planning discussion, Sacramento will host five Jane Jacobs Walks and one “Roll” bike ride. These tours explore how Sacramento’s city neighborhoods function for pedestrians and cyclists, residents and businesses, public transit and cars (or, in some cases, not.) All tours are free and open to the public.

This tour explores the social history of Sacramento’s LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) community, including political activism, social spaces, community centers and nightclubs. The tour will discuss significant events in Sacramento LGBT history, from early activism in the era before Stonewall through the formation of the "Lavender Heights" neighborhood, struggles for social equality and community response to the AIDS crisis. Led by Sacramento Heritage Inc. board member William Burg, and supported by the Sacramento LGBT Center, LLACE and Midtown Business Association. This tour is a "beta test" for a new walking tour supported by Sacramento Heritage, Inc., a city affiliated 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Comments and corrections are welcomed, as this tour will eventually be added to the Sacramento Heritage Inc. walking tour app.

The tour will begin at LLACE and last approximately 90 minutes, including stops at LLACE, the Sacramento LGBT Center, and Midtown Business Association. MBA will also host an after-tour reception at their office.

This informative bike tour begins at the parking lot of City Park Boat Rentals at Big Lake Trail. Taking safe biking routes, we will bike to the London Avenue Canal breach (5300 Warrington Drive) in the Filmore Gardens neighborhood of Gentilly and hear a short discussion of the breach disaster. We will visit a pump station and then bike along scenic Lake Pontchartrain to the 17th Street Canal breach (6932 Bellaire Drive) in the Lakeview neighborhood and hear another short discussion of the breach disaster. This year’s walk will take a look at upcoming development in part of the Kendall Square neighborhood in east Cambridge, which is bounded by the Charles River, MIT, a large land parcel where the federal government in 1964 erected the Volpe Building for its NASA space program, and more recent tech industry and hotels. Conceived when Kendall Square was a forlorn urban renewal site, the Volpe Building is now obsolete and may be demolished to make way for a new federal transportation building exempt from local regulations. MIT has just released plans for developing its campus alongside and to the south of the square. Residents in the surrounding neighborhoods, comprised of small businesses and residential streets, want a say in the area’s redevelopment.

Lunch to follow at the Meadhall restaurant, at the corner of Broadway and Ames Street, where those who wish may continue conversation and purchase lunch.
To help us consider and converse about issues raised by these projects, we will hear from the City of Cambridge’s recently retired director of urban design Roger Boothe, Charles Sullivan from the Cambridge Historical Commission, and representatives from MIT and the East Cambridge Planning Team, a citizens’ group.

This walk will be first of two walks conducted on two consecutive days and in two different parts of Hyderabad city.  The idea is to take the same set of walkers through neighbourhoods that have evolved at different points in the history of the city. The places we will be visiting are Moghalpura in the erstwhile walled city of Hyderabad and Marredpally in Secunderabad. These walks are an attempt to understand the subtleties that make these neighbourhoods sustain in a certain way due to their own histories, cultures, demographics and spatial development.

Opened in 1853, Pinewood-Elmwood is a local historic landmark and home to a veritable who’s who of Charlotte families, including many names you may recognize: Belk and Bearden, Myers and Morehead, Latta and Dowd. It is also beautiful – more than 70 acres of rolling green space, birdsong and majestic trees in the heart of Center City. You’ll learn about some of the cemetery’s oldest inhabitants, the wars and plagues that Charlotte’s citizens suffered, and how segregation, civil rights and integration played out in the cemetery between the 1930s and 1960s.

Explore artist Stacy Levy’s Passage of Rain installation with the artist and with Revolution Park neighborhood leader John Howard, City of Charlotte’s historic district administrator. Stacy Levy’s installation in west Charlotte’s Revolution Park neighborhood reveals the path of rain and runoff along a .8-mile stretch, from street to storm drain to stream to a final destination in Irwin Creek. Carthage Main Street along with The Carthage Historical Preservation Commission will be conducting our 4th annual Jane’s Jacob’s Walk on Saturday, May 2 at 9:00 a.m. The walk entitled “Look How Far We Have Come” will be a walk around the Historic Courthouse Square starting at the Old Main Office of Carthage Bank and will proceed around the square and end at the Leake County Chamber of Commerce Center with refreshments and a historical display. Join two local Keep America Beautiful affiliates as they clean up Little Sugar Creek. This is part of the Great American Cleanup, a nationwide series of cleanup and community beautification events underway March 1 - May 31.
