Nairobi: The New Urban Agenda and Stories of Change

  • United Nations Office of Nairobi United Nations Office of Nairobi Entrance, UN Avenue Gigiri, Nairobi Nairobi 00100 Kenya (map)

This Jane Jacobs Urban Walk, coordinated by the Habitat III Secretariat and UN-Habitat with local partners, will highlight the participatory planning activities of different groups in their communities. The New Urban Agenda underscores the necessity of involving key constituencies and communities in the planning and development of urban areas, and Nairobi offers rich examples of bottom-up change in diverse areas. The walk will explore three areas of Nairobi and how its residents are working to improve its urban spaces to be centered on its inhabitants.

Participants will meet in front of the United Nations compound and will be transported to the locations by van. It will start in Kibera, an informal settlement, where our partners at Kuonkuey Design Initiative (KDI) will guide walkers through the lens of its project #TujengeKibera, an online social media campaign and competition initiated that aimed to highlight stories of positive change in the Kibera informal settlement. Over the years there have been many stories written about Kibera and its residents, but this put the focus on residents who take responsibility for their environment and work to be the change they want to see, building and operating projects that positively impact their communities.

It will then move to the middle-income neighborhood of Kilimani, where its residents' association will walk participants through their combined efforts to create sidewalks and spaces in their neighborhood, transforming the area to be safer, more pedestrian friendly, and more accessible.

The urban walk will end with a visit to Pawa 254, an innovative space created to foster and promote artistic expression with a social conscious. The space has become known for enabling civil society to thrive and for bringing different active communities together, and elevating artistic expression in the city.
