Join us in celebrating the new sections of Parley’s Trail along with The Draw, an artistic passageway under 1300 East! Designed by world­ renowned environmental artist, Patricia Johanson, The Draw is intended as a beautiful public space with historical and cultural elements. It will also serve as a safe crossing of 1300 East connecting Sugar House Park with the Sugar House Business District. It is a crucial element of Parley’s Trail, which will provide an 8 mile east­-west link for the Salt Lake Valley. The trail is now completed from 1700 East to 1300 East in Sugar House Park, and from McClelland Street (1050 East) to State Street alongside the S-­Line Streetcar.  This totals 2.5 miles of paved shared­ use trail connecting homes, businesses, and parks in our
communities.

The ribbon ­cutting ceremony for The Draw starts at 10:30am and includes a few speakers. The Jane Jacobs Walk will follow and we will be some of the first people to walk through the tunnel under 1300 East. After this, we will tour the proposed route of Parley’s Trail in the Sugar House Business District. Lastly, we will explore the trail alongside the S­Line Streetcar to 700 East, where we will turn and walk back. Parley’s Rails Trails and Tunnels Coalition, a non­profit organization, will lead the walk and provide information and talking points along the way. We welcome open discussion in the form of questions, comments, concerns, and recommendations for the trail and The Draw. Join the East Central Community for the Second Annual Gems in the Garden Walk in the Douglas Neighborhood. The theme of this walk is urban agriculture. We will meet neighbors along the walk who who will share their experiences raising chickens, keeping bees, planting in pots, compatible gardening, and cold frame gardening for a harvest all year. Jai Hamid Bashir and Sean Goss, members of the Natural Leaders community through the Children & Nature Network, will lead this Walk. As trained Natural Leaders who attended the Natural Leaders Legacy Camp in Bainbridge Island, Washington in the Fall of 2013, we are hoping to utilize the tools and visions we gleaned from this camp to help children and youth of the Salt Lake Valley to get outdoors for the Children & Nature Network’s “Let’s G.O.” initiative.

Our effort is to put together an event that combines the mission of the late and esteemed urban ecologist and social thinker, Jane Jacobs, and children and nature. Our hope is by hosting this event we can expand our community’s ideas and vocabulary about nature and the environment, and help illustrate that being outdoors can be fun, insightful, and meaningful through a three-pronged vision of explore, observe, and connect.

A “share-out” will be a way for participants to share their observations, feelings and ideas as the walk progresses. It is also a time for reflection on the what, why, how, and when.

We will have group introductions through a very quick and easy ice-breaker, groups will be organized, student leaders assigned, and agenda explained. Sean and Jai will introduce themselves, and go through safety and expectations. An introduction of the “exploration” aspect will be quickly discussed. Student leaders will then ask participants to explore by taking pictures, collecting non-organic materials, and discussing the place (geography, weather, initial reactions). A portion of the walk will focus on using the senses to really absorb the surroundings—natural, organic, inorganic, built and non-built.
