Portland’s vibrant food and coffee culture is on full display in the downtown area. It’s more than cutting-edge cuisine and world-renowned java, though. The buildings that house these enterprises reveal clues about not only the owners and patrons, but how we want to feel about ourselves as Portlanders.
Our walk will examine a mix of the old and the new, the formal and the casual. We will try to show that, as much as filling our physical need for food and drink, downtown Portland’s bars, restaurants and coffee shops fill our emotional need for surroundings that speak to our nature as Pacific Northwesterners, as Oregonians, and as people.
