Jane Jacobs Walk in Juhu

We are focusing on ways to make Mumbai walkable and pedestrian friendly. The attempt is to make city more inclusive and participatory and less tolerant to cars. It’s a walk facilitated by The Urban Vision in honor of Jane Jacobs, an American urbanism thinker and activist who promoted the idea of walkability in neighborhoods.

Markets of Bandra

This walk aims to explore bandra’s colourful history through the lens of its markets. It also aims for a dialogue on how different communities interact and create and break boundaries over food and ingredients. This walk will cover old catholic bakeries that give bandra it’s daily bread. The meat markets where everything, including your caste is on display. The sanitised urban supermarket, the fisherwomen who hawk their wares along an old village bylane, the gent who used to own a barbecue, where neighbours and strangers could buy food and stop for a chat, the lady who cooks at her doorstep, and feeds the migrant guards as well as migrant white collar worker. This is bandra, through smell, sound, sight and the people of its markets.

Mazagaon, one of the few remaining European remnants of Mumbai, is the hotbed of continuous metamorphosis due to its historic ability to encompass the new and the old of influences. Proof of this, is its possession of the spatial intersections of various religious & regional communities , such as the Maharashtrians, East Indians, Anglo-Indians, Catholic Konkanies, Khoja Muslims, Bori Muslims & many more. This walk wishes to showcase the rich cultural heritage that exists in Mazagaon, as well as provide a commentary on the existing social structure of the area. Included in this, are chronicles of Mazagaon’s forgotten past, stories of impending change and urban legends that continue to haunt its residents to this day. All in all, this is a walk to have a dialogue about how cities are made by and of people, and how it belongs to each of us, even the scary bits.

Time: 7.30 am to 9.30 am
