Uptown Detroit- Along Eight Mile

The walk starts at Baker’s Keyboard Lounge at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 5. From there, walkers will head onto 8 Mile Road, which in that area is home to several banks, a medical laboratory and auto parts store.  Hear the history of 8 Mile, and a little about its future (including a new shopping center nearby anchored by Meijer). Someone who lives right on 8 Mile also will share their perspective and stories before walkers head into the quieter tree-lined streets of Greenacres. The walk ends with conversation and snacks – and some music.  We have no indication that Eminem will show up but we may play at least one of his songs!

Participants of “The Roots of Mack Avenue” walk can expect to learn the about the past, present and FUTURE of the once bustling commercial corridor of Mack Avenue with the introduction of the Green Thoroughfare project.  In its heyday, this section of Mack Avenue was home to theaters, furniture stores, bakeries, & a host of other retail shops. Today less than ten businesses remain among the 111 parcels in this corridor. Along this walk of the past and present, we will discuss the future.
