West End Walk: South of Farmington Avenue

The West End Jane Jacobs Walks, sponsored by the West End Civic Association (WECA), are three concurrent walks that will explore the rich architectural, historical, social, educational, and environmental treasures found in the West End neighborhood. Participants will explore and look at the nooks and crannies of different areas of the West End, talk and tell stories about life in the West End in the past and today, and perhaps tomorrow.

The South of Farmington Avenue walk will be led by Mary Falvey, of the Hartford Preservation Alliance. It will begin at the United Methodist Church of Hartford (571 Farmington Avenue, at the corner of South Whitney Street), where participants will be welcomed by Rev. Cynthia Major, pastor, who will talk about the vital and multidimensional role the Church plays in the community. The walk will then proceed along Farmington Avenue, Beacon Street, Warrenton Avenue, and Tremont Street.

All walkers are invited to come to the Connecticut Historical Society at the end of their walks to see the collection of architectural blue prints of West End homes. CHS will offer admission free of charge on the day of the walk.

Time: 10:00am-12:00pm

Date: Saturday, May 5th

Route: Begin at the United Methodist Church of Hartford, 571 Farmington Avenue (at the corner of South Whitney Street). Proceed along Farmington Avenue, Beacon Street, Warrenton Avenue and Tremont Street.

West End Walk: Connecticut Historical Society Walk

The West End Jane Jacobs Walks, sponsored by the West End Civic Association (WECA), are three concurrent walks that will explore the rich architectural, historical, social, educational, and environmental treasures found in the West End neighborhood. Participants will explore and look at the nooks and crannies of different areas of the West End, talk and tell stories about life in the West End in the past and today, and perhaps tomorrow.

The Connecticut Historical Society  Walk will be led by Mike McGarry, who has lived in the West End for many years, and Don Poland of Hartford Walking Tours LLC.  It will begin at the Connecticut Historical Society (One Elizabeth Street), and then proceed along Elizabeth Street, Asylum Avenue (where Woodside Circle, Goodwin Estates and Hartford College for Women sites will be identified), Kenyon Street, and Fern Street to the University of Connecticut School of Law and Hartford Seminary.  There will also time for an optional walk along the nature trail off Lorraine Street.  Walkers will then return to the Connecticut Historical Society.
